5-MeO-DMT – An overview

5-MeO-DMT is the strongest existing psychedelic, the only one in its league and illegalized in many countries, although the human body builds and contains it naturally. The following text is not a scientific representation of this topic since the research situation is inadequate. It serves as an information basis and discussion incentive and is by no means a recommendation for consumption.

How does 5-MeO-DMT work?

Unlike most other psychedelic substances, 5-MeO-DMT has barely any visual qualities. Visual content only occurs in isolated cases and is of visionary nature. It is therefore extremely misleading to name 5-MeO-DMT a hallucinogen. Rather, the substance initiates an energetic process, which in many cases culminates in a so-called full release or enlightenment experience. Therefore the terms entheogen (“revealing the divine”) or simply psychedelic (“revealing the soul”) are more suitable.

All psychedelic substances change the self-image temporarily. The ego is changed, throttled or shut down completely. In this context, “ego” must be understood as the active multitude of cultural convictions and personal ideas about the past and the future. With 5-MeO-DMT, the ego-shut-down effect is more immediate than with any other substance. Within seconds the imagined separation between I and other can be revoked and consciousness can realize its existence in the boundless Now. However, the substance does not take away free will. Those who are not prepared to let go can hold on to their ego, at the price of an intense feeling of terror. To a certain extent this can be prevented if the individual is educated about the importance of surrender.

Mental-emotional control urge is the root of psychological suffering and the opposite of the effect of 5-MeO-DMT. Almost all humans have energetic blockages, because they repress the emotional content of unpleasant and undesirable experiences. Feelings that are not felt nest as blocked energies in the personal unconscious. In addition, the ego compulsively produces restrictive aversions and attachments which also lay ground for blocked energies. 5-MeO-DMT opens a room in which blocked energies can be released. Lyrically speaking: It opens the heart in its deepest chambers. Outwardly this can appear quite prosaic, namely by grunting, gargling, vomiting, wriggling, crying, screaming, laughing etc..

Furthermore, 5-MeO-DMT has biologically beneficial qualities. In 2017, a study observed a laboratory-bred brain under the influence of 5-MeO-DMT. Proteins that are important for synapse formation and maintenance have been upregulated. These include proteins that are related to cellular mechanisms of learning and memory, i.e. key components of brain function. However, proteins involved in inflammation, degeneration and brain lesions were down-regulated. Case reports such as that of Dr. Oktavio Rettig prove the significance of the anti-inflammatory effect:

“I discovered a spider bit on my leg. It became quite painful, so took the toad medicine [5-MeO-DMT] to get a good’s night sleep. I woke up the next morning and my leg was 80 % better.””[1]

Up to now Rettig has administered 5-MeO-DMT to over 8000 people. It happens regularly that people can overcome an methamphetamine, crack or heroin addiction after only one administration of 5-MeO-DMT. Therefore it can be assumed that a high dose of 5-MeO-DMT triggers a process that goes far beyond the acute effect. 5-MeO-DMT opens a paths to self-healing that always existed, but were undiscovered. It is as if an elementary formula is activated in the basic code of the psyche thanks to which an individual can transform in a psychologically healing way. Of course, willingness to change is a critical factor.

What’s important for the user?

It’s all about the trust to let yourself fall unconditionally. The substance is so powerful that, unlike normal doses of other psychedelics, it usually forces a surrender of the ego. Otherwise the state simply becomes too unpleasant for the individual. However, each person is uniquely knitted – some can let go directly, others fight long against the inner opening and may need a second dose. The latter don’t do anything wrong – it is just the lifelong programming of their psyche that manifests itself.

5-MeO-DMT is not a substance for recreational or chronic use and should only be taken in a safe, distraction-free environment. Psychedelic festivals are not a suitable place. It should be a place where you can scream, cheer, grunt, spit or cry undisturbed. You should be able to fall softly, for example on a bed, a meadow or on sand. At best 5-MeO-DMT should be inhaled while sitting, so that one only has to lean back.

Physical symmetry is extremely important for an optimal therapeutic effect. After overcoming the attachment of false self-images and the opening of inner blockages, the body will automatically assume a symmetrical position. In order to process energys as quickly as possible, it is advisable to consistently maintain symmetry. By forming non-duality, the body can easily break down emotional blockages that result from dual thinking.

For detailed information on this topic, we recommend Martin Ball’s book, which was published in 2017: “Enthoegenic Liberation: Unraveling the enigma of non-duality with 5-MeO-DMT energetic therapy”. Ball recommends vaporization (or smoking) as the route of administration, possibly with one or two repetitions in one session for better integration.[2]

Is 5-MeO-DMT suitable for everyone?

5-MeO-DMT is an endogenous hormone and in this sense a part of every human being. However, not everyone is prepared for every exogenously administered dose. Especially people with a strong mental control urge could fight against the opening and thus run the risk of traumatizing themselves. The largest “risk group” in this respect are people with a pronounced narcissistic disorder.

Nevertheless, everyone can benefit from 5-MeO-DMT. People who are not willing to give up (the illusion of) control may take a dose in the range 1-4 mg. In this area, the molecule will initialize a smaller opening processes without the consumer having to be afraid of completely losing the familiar everyday world. For example, if someone is willing to work on himself and open for change, a small dose administered once a week over time can be a helpful boost in the right direction. This should be done under supervision of a professional therapist.

It is impossible to predict how a person will react to 5-MeO-DMT because it affects the deepest layers of the psyche. The effect is the same for everyone, but not the reaction of the individual ego to the effect. Therefore, the first experiences with the substance should always be in the presence of someone who is familiar with it.

What distinguishes 5-Meo-DMT from other psychedelic substances?

It is difficult to formulate general statements, as the conditions of the effectiveness also depend on the dose. However, some general distinctions can be made.

The effect of most psychedelic substances has a distinct visual component. Compared to this, visual changes through 5-MeO-DMT are only a marginal side effect. High doses can cancel out the sensual perception and allow consciousness to exclusively experience its own light.

The main effect of 5-MeO-DMT lasts only 15 minutes. After that, it fades out for another 45 minutes. One must not be deceived by the shortness of of the duration. In terms of intensity and effectiveness, a higher dose of 5-MeO-DMT can not only be equal to an ayahuasca session or a psycholytic session with a high dose of LSD or psilocybin, it can exceed it significantly . Especially the sustainability of a 5-MeO-DMT experience is amazing. The neuronal and energetic pathways newly knotted and revealed during the effect continue to exist even after only a single consumption of a higher dose. It is possible that people talk about being given a new life after only one high dose.

All psychedelic substances can bring displaced contents to the surface. A common “trip” with, for example, 150 µg LSD can be understood as swimming in the sea of consciousness, so that thoughts and images are reassociated. 5-MeO-DMT is way more radical. It is less a swimming experience and more like getting beamed directly into deep sea. Thoughts and images are mostly bound to certain energy patterns stored in the body, which we perceive as urgent, bottled-up or inadequate feelings. 5-MeO-DMT brings these deep-seated congestions to the surface, where they can be quickly and sustainably resolved if the individual surrenders to the energetic flow. The individual is not in control of this process, but it is absolutely relevant to voluntarily allow the flow of these energies.

No other substance in the world is as suitable for breaking down energy blockages as 5-MeO-DMT. Those who let the medicine work without trying to maintain a certain control over their repressions and behaviours can deal with anger, anger, hatred, fear, despair etc. through the opening. The body knows what to do after intake of 5-MeO-DMT. The individual simply has to surrender to this process.

Apart from the fact that under optimal conditions twenty minutes with 5-MeO-DMT can be more liberating than two weeks of vacation, 5-MeO-DMT has no recreational aspects. Even the smallest doses provide no incentive to be taken for fun or distraction. This is because 5-MeO-DMT directly touches the core of human existence. The dose determines whether this touch is a little tap or a full reach around.

Is 5-MeO-DMT a magic pill?

For a stable sustainability of a positive effect the individual must pursue the task of opening up internally again and again. If the paths revealed by 5-MeO-DMT are not followed without the influence of a substance, the possible progression will get stuck in old behavior patterns. Nothing gets good just by taking 5-MeO-DMT. However, 5-MeO-DMT motivates and promotes vital recalibration and self-realization.

Is only a full release experience a successful 5-MeO-DMT experience?

Those who want a completely non-dual enlightenment experience need a full breakthrough, the immersion into their own timeless and spaceless impersonal light. It is not necessary to keep chasing this experience because it always contains the same message. If someone wants to initiate a full release several times, one should keep a time interval (maybe a month or even more) between the sessions and observe to what extent ego energy creeps in again.

If someone prefers to clean up the individual energetic household less radically, one can have also succces  with smaller doses. The advantage of smaller doses is that they can be slowly increased until an optimal dose is reached for the individual. Even a small dose can help to reconnect to the heart. An opening of the space of consciousness already happens with small doses, so that things can be viewed from a different perspective or more from the heart’s perspective.

Therefore it is recommended to begin with smaller doses and increase them slowly. Once you have reached a dose at which the full non-dual experience has occurred, you do not need to increase the dose further. From a classical psychotherapeutic point of view, the full non-dual experience does not have to be the goal. What is relevant is what concretely helps the individual to reduce his or her emotional pain body. Small steps may be more stable and sustainable in this respect than milestones that cannot be integrated afterwards.

Why is 5-MeO-DMT still relatively unknown?

Since 5-MeO-DMT is found naturally in relevant amounts only in the secretion of the Bufo Alavarius toad of the Mexican Sonora desert, there are no broad cultural traditions of consumption as with psilocybin or N,N-DMT. When James Oroc published “Tryptamine Palace: 5-MeO-DMT and the Sonoran Desert Toad” in 2009, the first book on the subject, 5-MeO-DMT was still an insider tip.[4] A short time later, the substance was banned in most countries. Manufacturers and sellers of research chemicals had to remove them from their selection. In addition, 5-MeO-DMT is not relevant for recreational consumers, so that there has never been a broad entry into the psychedelic underground culture.

What are the dangers?

As already indicated, the main danger is that people are unwilling to drop their previous assumptions about who they are. When someone blocks himself for a transforming process, energetic changes can be initiated without being completed, which can lead to more confusion than clarity. The likelihood of this problem can be reduced by appropriate clarification before administration.

If someone gets stuck in an energetic process, it may make sense to dose again despite possible aversion. In many cases this is better than leaving the respective psyche “alone” halfway, i.e. without exogenous-psychedelic impetus. On the other hand, if you don’t have the time to work on an integration of this radical experiences, you shouldn’t use 5-MeO-DMT that often. The more people are unconscious and dissociated in their  everyday life the more the consequences of a regular intake will overtax them.

Doses above 20 mg HCl or 17 mg Freebase should only be taken by very experienced psychonauts. More than 25 mg Freebase are nearly never necessary. The right dose depends on the individual and even 10 mg can evoke a full release experience. Unlike N,N-DMT, 5-MeO-DMT should not be combined with MAO inhibitors because this mixture can cause sometimes life-threatening side effects in the higher dose range. It is also not necessary, as the 10 minutes of a full dose can already exceed the healing potential of an ayahuasca session.

In the normal dose range, consumption is physically very safe for healthy people. However, higher doses can be life-threatening for people with cardiac insufficiency. Also, people with a lung problem should not inhale heavy clouds of smoke too deeply and for too long, as is necessary when consuming the toad secretion.

Does 5-MeO-DMT stimulate “kundalini” energy?

What is referred to as “kundalini” can be stimulated by 5-MeO-DMT. There is a direct connection. The stimulation can be persistent. Whether this is desirable or even dangerous depends on the individual. Those who are not ready can get into an existential overload by having an (over)active kundalini. Therefore, higher doses of 5-MeO-DMT should never be taken regularly by psychonautical novices.

Why should be worked with synthetic 5-MeO-DMT?

With synthetic 5-MeO-DMT, intensive inhalation of a large mass of smoke is not necessary, as only about one-fifth of the amount is required compared toad secretion. More precise dosing is only possible with synthetic 5-MeO-DMT. Last but not least, it must be considered that the toads have a right to be left alone. Bufo tourism must be prevented at all costs. The idea that 5-MeO-DMT produced in nature would be better than synthesized in any way is simply wrong. Although the toad’s secretion contains other substances, synthetic 5-MeO-DMT alone is completely sufficient for the desired therapeutic effects.
